A builder in Bowral with a slab on the programme has three options: pull a city crew down and hope they stay, use a concreter who fixes steel on the side, or wait. None of those are good for a programme.
We are the fourth option — a dedicated reinforcement crew that has already run a Highlands job from start to finish. Strip and pad footings, blade wall steel, lift pit and plant room, and the waffle-pod ground slab on a new architect-designed residence at Mittagong for One Up Building. Four fixers, continuous run, weekends worked to hold the pour dates.
MJK is run out of Wollongong and our fixers travel in from Sydney and the Illawarra. Regional work is a logistics problem, and we solve it the same way every time: crew size, travel, accommodation and weekend coverage agreed in writing before anyone mobilises, and priced into the number you are comparing. Nothing turns up later as a variation.
That is the part that matters out here. Anyone can quote a job out of town. Turning up every day for the length of the programme is the actual test.

We are a labour-only reinforcement subcontractor. We do not supply steel and we do not bundle margin into materials you can buy better yourself. You engage us for the installation — placing, tying and positioning reinforcement to the engineer’s drawings, ready for inspection and pour.

Strip and pad footings, pier cages and pile caps.

Blade walls, core walls, retaining walls, columns and starter bars.

We are not a concreter who also fixes steel. It shows in set-out, in how quickly a crew reads an unfamiliar schedule, and in how few RFIs come back off our work.

Do you provide steel fixing in the Southern Highlands?
Yes. MJK Contracting takes reinforcement work across the Southern Highlands and the Wingecarribee — Bowral, Mittagong, Moss Vale, Berrima, Bundanoon and surrounds. We delivered the full reinforcement package on a new architect-designed residence at Mittagong for One Up Building.
Where do your crews travel from?
MJK is run out of Wollongong and our fixers travel in from Sydney and the Illawarra. For Highlands work we mobilise a crew and keep them on the job for the run rather than commuting people in and out daily. That is deliberate: continuity is what holds a pour date, and it is why we can offer weekend coverage on a regional job.
Do you charge for mobilisation, travel and accommodation on Highlands jobs?
Yes. Regional work carries mobilisation, travel and accommodation, and we set those out clearly at quote stage so they sit inside the price you are comparing rather than arriving later as a variation. Having already run a Highlands job, we know what those costs actually are rather than guessing at them.
What is steel fixing?
Steel fixing, also called reinforcement installation or reo fixing, is placing, tying and positioning steel reinforcing bar inside formwork before a concrete pour. Bar marks have to match the schedule, laps have to meet the specified length, and cover has to be right on every face, because cover is what stops the steel corroding and the concrete spalling in ten years time. Starter bars have to finish in the right position, because the next trade builds off them.
What types of reinforcement work do you take on?
Labour-only reinforcement installation — slabs, footings, walls, columns, beams, lift pits and civil structures. Residential, commercial and civil, from large architect-designed homes through to government housing.
Can you provide crews at short notice?
Often, yes — it depends what is running. Call and we will give you a straight answer on availability rather than a maybe.
Are you insured and compliant?
Yes. MJK Contracting Pty Ltd holds current public liability and workers compensation insurance, with certificates of currency available on request. All crew hold current White Cards and work under site-specific SWMS. We have maintained a 100% safety record since 2021.
Do you take on homeowner projects as well as builder work?
Yes. We work directly for builders and head contractors, and we will also take homeowner projects where a dedicated reinforcement crew makes sense.
