01 — The job

One slab, eleven decisions.

A new single-level pavilion residence in the Southern Highlands. MJK installed the reinforcement across the whole ground floor structure for head contractor One Up Building.

The ground floor isn’t one flat slab. It steps across levels, wraps courtyards, and carries a lift pit, a plant room and a run of blade walls — each with its own cover requirements, laps and starter bars waiting on the next trade. Set that out wrong and the formwork crew finds out first, the certifier finds out second, and everybody loses a day standing around on pour morning.

So we work drawings first, steel second. Bar marks checked against the schedule. Cover confirmed before a single chair goes down. Starters tied so they are still where the engineer put them after the concrete is in.

The steel goes in right, the programme stays put, and the builder gets to think about something else.
02 — Getting crews to the Highlands

Turning up is the actual test.

Distance is the part builders outside the metro actually worry about. There are fewer crews to call, and a no-show on a Monday costs a week. Most reinforcement crews will quote a Highlands job. Far fewer will still be there in week three.

We mobilised four fixers to this one and kept them on it — continuous run, same faces, weekends worked to hold the pour dates. The travel and accommodation arrangement was agreed in writing before anyone got in a ute and priced into the job, so nothing arrived later as a variation.

  • Crew mobilised and kept on site for the run
  • Weekend coverage to hold the pour dates
  • Travel and accommodation agreed in writing upfront
  • White Card held by all crew
  • Insurances current and verified, certificates on request
  • 100% safety record since 2021
